Asia-Pacific flats: Sellers cut prices on slow trade
Slow trade in China and regional markets prompted sellers to cut prices.
Market sentiment weakened as high temperatures and rains further dampened demand in many Chinese regions, and steel mills’ hot-rolled coil (HRC) production remained elevated. Some mills proposed a Yn50-55/t reduction in met- allurgical coke prices from 12 June because of weak steel demand.
Shanghai mainstream HRC ex-warehouse prices fell by 20 yuan/t ($2.76/t) to Yn3,780/t on 11 June.
October HRC futures on the Shanghai Futures Exchange fell by 1.62pc to Yn3,766/t. Physical trading was slow, with only a few end-users restocking after prices dropped. Argus- assessed Shanghai HRC prices slipped to a two-month low.
The fob China HRC index fell by $1/t to $524/t on lower offers. A large Chinese mill cut its offer by $10/t to $545/t fob China for S5400 HRC. Another mill in north China cut its offer by $5/t to $545/t fob China to reflect lower domestic prices. A third mill cut its offer by $5/t to $530/t fob China. Several other major Chinese mills or traders cut prices or offers to the equivalent of $520-528/t fob China. But sea- borne buyers were quiet, in light of the falling trend. A large Chinese mill sold HRC at a base level of $530/t fob China to Vietnam last week, with no further details. The mill is open to orders at $525-530/t fob China for SS400 HRC today because of falling domestic prices and the paucity of buying interest, participants said.
